Marmot area: Building a safer Gwent

The Marmot City approach, pioneered by Sir Michael Marmot, focuses on using a trauma-informed model to address health inequalities that affect both individuals and wider communities. The Gwent Public Service Board adopted the Marmot principles to create a regional framework across Gwent –  Building a Fairer Gwent.

This report highlights the connection between health inequalities, the risk of adverse childhood experiences and trauma, and the substantial impacts these have on communities and community safety.

At this seminar we will be joined by Professor Tracy Daszkiewicz, Executive Director for Public Health and Strategic Partnerships at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, and David Leech, Deputy Chief Executive of Torfaen County Borough Council. They will delve into the Marmot approach, share why Gwent adopted it at a regional level, and reflect on the challenges and opportunities this partnership has navigated.

This work serves as a vital contribution to advancing our understanding of community-level initiatives designed to tackle root causes, ultimately fostering greater community safety and wellbeing.
