Diversion for drug possession offences

in the Dyfed Powys area

Diversion to treatment is one of the key pillars of the Dyfed Powys Police drugs strategy. A successful scheme has been introduced for adults caught in possession of illegal substances, offering a pathway to treatment and rehabilitation outside the traditional criminal justice system.

The project has had three core benefits.

  • A positive rate of engagement with treatment services and a reduction in street-level demand for drugs
  • Increased police capacity, allowing officers to focus on prevention, tackling drug supply, and other priority areas
  • Reduced pressure on the criminal justice system, with fewer open investigations and a shift in focus towards more serious drug offences

Join Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn and Detective Superintendent Gareth Roberts on 3 June as they share how the scheme was introduced, the multi-agency partnership behind it, and the successes and challenges of embedding a public health approach to drug possession.
