Seminar: Marmot Area – Building a Safer Gwent

We recently held the first seminar in our seminar series focussed on social justice and community impact. This seminar, delved into the Marmot approach and its application in Gwent.

Understanding the Marmot Approach

The Marmot approach, named after Professor Michael Marmot, emphasises the importance of addressing social determinants of health to reduce health inequalities. This approach advocates for a broader environmental perspective, considering factors such as socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental conditions that impact health outcomes. Key principles include giving every child the best start in life and enabling all individuals to maximise their capabilities.

Implementing the Marmot Approach in Gwent

In Gwent, the Marmot approach has been implemented with a focus on creating healthy environments and addressing structural barriers to achieve social justice. Efforts have been made to tackle commercial determinants of health, such as the availability and marketing of tobacco and alcohol. Community engagement has been a cornerstone of this implementation, involving community leaders, venues, and groups to build capacity for primary prevention activities.

Building Resilient Communities

Building resilience within communities is crucial for the success of the Marmot approach. This involves identifying risks and vulnerabilities, creating protective factors, and adopting a multi-pronged approach that includes service development, intelligence, behaviour science, and safer communities. The alignment of the Marmot approach with the Future Generations Act further supports long-term health and well-being.
