Safer Communities Board for Wales meeting executive summary – September 2025
The Safer Communities Board for Wales meeting was held virtually on 10 September 2025. Key topics discussed included legislative changes, justice reform, community safety, and strategic planning. Updates were given on the Sentencing Review, Fixed Term Recall, Leveson Review, and the Spending Review.
Members explored the implications of the SDS40 early release scheme on housing and community services, emphasising the need for improved communication and collaboration across sectors.
The Board reviewed the Casey Review on Child Sexual Exploitation and the Police Landscape Reform, highlighting the importance of efficiency and Welsh representation. It was reported that the Welsh Government summit on violence and safety in schools has led to the formation of a forum addressing exclusions, expulsions and mobile phone use. The Criminal Justice Board for Wales shared plans for impact assessments and youth development.
The Summer ASB campaign showcased multi-agency efforts to enhance safety in town centres, with initiatives ranging from increased patrols to youth engagement and retail support.
Other current issues brought by members for discussion included flag visibility, misinformation, and the cost of living’s impact on the third sector.
Tributes were paid to Mid and West Wales Chief Fire Officer Roger Thomas for his contributions to the Board and the Safer Communities Network as he is due to retire next month.
The next meeting is scheduled for 20 November 2025. Actions agreed include follow-ups on school site security, flag protocol, and civility in public life.
