Seminar: Right Care, Right Person

The fifth and final seminar in the Wales Safer Communities Network social justice and community impact seminar series explored the implementation of the Right Care, Right Person (RCRP) model in Wales. This approach aims to ensure that individuals experiencing health and social care crises receive the most appropriate response from the right agency, rather than defaulting to police intervention.

Understanding the RCRP Model

The RCRP model is designed to reduce the deployment of police officers to incidents involving mental health, vulnerability, or welfare concerns. By clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of partner agencies, the model promotes a more effective and compassionate response to individuals in need. It also supports better outcomes for communities by ensuring that people receive care from professionals best equipped to help them and can result in quicker response times.

Implementation in Wales

The seminar highlighted how police and partners have begun rolling out the RCRP model across Wales. There is a phased approach to implementation, and the first two phases have been successfully rolled out across all four police forces. This process includes mapping current demand, identifying gaps in service provision, and fostering collaboration between police, health, local authorities and social care services. The approach aligns with the principles of early intervention and prevention, aiming to reduce harm and improve community safety outcomes.
