Diversion to treatment is one of the key pillars of the Dyfed Powys Police drugs strategy. A successful scheme has been introduced for adults caught in possession of illegal substances, offering a pathway to treatment and rehabilitation outside the traditional criminal justice system.
The project has had three core benefits.
A positive rate of engagement with treatment services and a reduction in street-level demand for drugs
Increased police capacity, allowing officers to focus on prevention, tackling drug supply, and other priority areas
Reduced pressure on the criminal justice system, with fewer open investigations and a shift in focus towards more serious drug offences
Join Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn and Detective Superintendent Gareth Roberts on 3 June as they share how the scheme was introduced, the multi-agency partnership behind it, and the successes and challenges of embedding a public health approach to drug possession.
