Knives in Schools Seminar

This seminar explores the issue of knives in schools through a prevention-led, partnership-based lens, drawing on national policy, local intelligence and lived experience. Speakers from policing, local government, and the Violence Prevention and Reduction Unit (VPRU) set out the strategic context for addressing knife-related harm among children and young people in Wales. The session highlights the importance of early intervention, trauma‑informed practice and whole‑system working, with a focus on building safer school communities through data, evidence and effective collaboration.

The seminar also introduces Weapons in Schools and Educational Settings (WISES) Guidance, developed in Cardiff in response to concerns raised by headteachers and co‑produced with schools, young people and safeguarding partners. Attendees will hear about the development of the guidance, the legal framework, and practical approaches to managing incidents where weapons are suspected or found on school premises. The guidance is being rolled out across Wales, and this is an opportunity for Local Authorities to learn from the experience in Cardiff while developing and implementing the guidance.

The session concludes with reflections on emerging trends, public trust and preparedness, and how professionals can work together to respond consistently and confidently to this complex issue.
